Every country has its national holidays, but there are also holidays that are common for many countries. New Year’s Day is the first holiday of each New Year. In Russia it is the most popular holiday, but in the West people pay more attention to Christmas.

New Year is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. Everyone hopes that next new year will be better than the last one. As usual people make New Year Resolutions, they promise to start doing morning exercises, to eat healthier food. Unfortunately people don’t always keep them.

The celebration of this holiday begins on New Year’s Eve, that is, on the 31st of December. At home people stay up until midnight and much later. They light coloured lamps on New Year Tree and have late dinner with champagne. Sometimes they just watch TV or go out for late walk. Everybody gets presents.

In Scotland New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay. Also the Scottish have the custom of First-Footing.

Most differences in celebrating New Year are connected with a meal or special food. For example, in Switzerland special bread, rich in butter, eggs and raisin is baked and a roasted goose is cooked. In Spain there is a custom to eat 12 grapes at midnight. In Greece some people play cards believing that they will be lucky the whole year if they win. In Russia the traditional dish for the holiday is “Russian salad”(оливье).

New Year is one of the most beloved and cherished holidays of the year. Both adults and children like celebrating this day. In most countries it traditionally falls on the night of December 31 st . Thus, January 1 st marks the beginning of the new calendar year.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.

Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.

My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.

For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31 st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.

At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

My name is Catherine. I’m 12 years old. In our family’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. In late December, the streets, parks, plazas dress in festive attire. Through the streets and squares stretched garlands colored lanterns. Everyone is preparing for the New Year. And in the main square set a huge tree. We are beginning to prepare for the holiday. On Christmas fairs buy each other gifts, Christmas decorations and tinsel. December 30, we set an artificial tree, and I myself dress up her for the holiday, hang toys, garlands. December 31 I help my mother to cook a festive table on arrival. New Year’s Eve always seems to me a magical and unforgettable. New Year Celebration in my family starts in the middle of December, when we begin to decorate our apartment and buy presents. We used to decorate an artificial tree, not a real one. Artificial tree stays longer with no cutting needed. We love to decorate the tree with toys, multicolored New Year baubles, sweets and mandarins, then we put a big beautiful star on the top, and little colored lights on the tree branches.

All apartment are adorned with glittering tinsels and with hand-made fir wreath on the door. All of us hide New Year presents under the tree, we love to put the present into special boxes or in wrapping paper, so we never know what is inside. Me and my mom always cook a very sophisticated dinner, including some elaborate dishes and a cake. Our relatives come to our place, and they also put their presents under the tree.

Just before midnight at 11.55 pm our president addresses all the people with his New Year speech. He reflects on the past year, and wishes everybody happiness in New Year. Then we raise a toast while the chiming clock on the Kremlin Tower is counting down the last seconds of the year. After that my grandfather wears a costume of Grandfather Frost, he plays funny games with us, we dance together, sing New Year songs. Late at night we start to open our presents. Magical time! I usually get many nice useful things from my family and relatives!

I love to spend this holiday with my family!

What is New Year"s?
